FROM WASTE TO VALUE

Oceanbound has installed its waste-interception barrier on the Río Choluteca, a few kilometres downstream of Tegucigalpa, to stop plastic waste continuing toward the mangrove areas of the Bay of Fonseca.

THE PROBLEM

Plastic waste flows downstream.

The Río Choluteca runs through Tegucigalpa, with approximately two million inhabitants. Plastic carried downstream threatens the river environment and the mangrove areas of the Bay of Fonseca.

THE OCEANBOUND SOLUTION

Intercept the waste before it reaches the ocean.

Maritiem designed, developed and supplied the Oceanbound Barrier. Honduras contractor Eterna, located next to the river, supported barrier installation and operations.

LOCAL IMPLEMENTATION

Working with communities around the river.

Local co-operatives consisting mainly of women help with sorting the plastic waste. Our projects create employment for communities around the river.
